The Occupation of Estonia occurred in the late stages of the Great War. In October of 1917, the Imperial German Army and Navy occupied the West Estonian Archipelago consisting of three islands: Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, and Muhn.
Fighting ceased in the area while the Russians were negotiating with the German Empire that became the Treaty of Brest-Litwosk and these negotiates broke down in February and to put the pressure on the brand new Soviet regime in Russia to sign the treaty, the Germans landed on mainland Estonia and marched right into Haapsalu in late February and the rest of Estonia fell into German hands by early March of 1918. Later, Estonia became part of the German Military Administration for Estonia, Livonia, Osel, Riga, and Curonia due to the Soviet regime denouncing all claims to Estonia and Germany was free to create Baltic client states.
On September 29th, 1917, a German invasion force of 25,000 soldiers which accompanied an armada and nearly 100 planes appeared in the Estonian archipelago. Erich Lundendorff had proposed a decisive strike that would cause Russia’s government to pull out of the war. A massive operation, the largest the world had ever seen at that point in time, would capture the islands of Osel, Moon Sound, and Dago, and take control of the Gulf of Riga. This would not only give support to the German troops at Riga but it also prepare for a future offensive towards Petrograd, the seat of the Russian government. Although the Russian Army was disorganized by turmoil at home and desertions, the defense held. In October, the second Russian revolution silenced the defenses with gun crews, pilots, and officers deserting and being arrested. The German infantry seized the islands and took 20,000 prisoners and the remnants of the Russian navy were forced to retreat. By late October, the German Imperial Navy and Army had seized the entire gulf.
Operation Albion is probably one of my favorite maps in this entire DLC, it reminds me of what Battlefield is and what Battlefield stands for. It’s this massive map set on the three islands and one has a eerie looking lighthouse that looks like it’s hiding something but it’s this huge map with aircraft and landing boats and a huge ship that the German team spawns on and you can snipe people from it.
The Russians spawn on the far end of the gulf with trying to build or repair their coastal gun batteries that does massive damage to airplanes and landing craft. One thing I like about Operation Albion is how huge this map, this map is probably twice the size of Galicia with flags being spread far apart on the different islands. It’s a pretty huge map with trench lines and a small fishing village. This map is beautiful too, the breathtaking view of the island when you’re in the air is a little bit mind-blowing or when you’re walking and stand on a hill and see the full island is breathtaking.
Here, there are no spawn traps and weird bullshit that most of the other maps have within Battlefield 1. It doesn’t suffer from any of the syndromes like Giant’s Shadow or most of the maps suffer from, it’s a pretty legit map. Definitely one of my favorites.
Stay tuned for the finale about the last two set of maps before going hands on with the new Supply Drop game mode that the DLC brought in.
