( Hi! Welcome to Report, a series about the biggest news in gaming. I’m currently working on a schedule for Report, please let me know if you like this! Please give feedback in the comments. Would like to know your thoughts.)
When Microsoft shuttered the doors of “Lionhead Studios.” , Microsoft has remained silent on what’s the current status of the iconic franchise. Apart from Fable Fortune, the main franchise has been dormant since Microsoft cancelled Fable Legends. Despite this, going all the way back to last year, there has been rumors about Microsoft bringing back the franchise.
A new report from Eurogamer emerged this week supporting this rumor, with sources telling Eurogamer that Playground Games will be in charge of the game with it being a story and character-focused action RPG. Work on the project is currently in early days, with development needing 200 people to begin working on the project. If it is true, which I believe it is, then this would indicate that it’s debut is still far away and maybe not coming to light until next generation rolls around.
According to Eurogamer, Microsoft drew some inspiration from Horizon Zero Dawn, the game itself has proven that strong single-player experiences can still see success as the industry moves and is currently in transition to “games-as-a-service.” games like Call of Duty.
The revival of Fable would be welcomed by many, including myself as right now Microsoft is struggling with first-party exclusives, but it remains to be seen how Microsoft would approach this project. Microsoft cut ties with Lionhead Studios and Peter Molyneux and the project is apparently starting from scratch, from the ground up, and ditching all the assets and resources from Fable Legends. I’m very hopeful for this because it’s a new fresh team that’s taking a crack at it and it’s far away from Molyneux as possible but I’m also kinda skeptical because it doesn’t have the talent from the original Fable games.
If this turns out to be true then I will welcome it with open arms and I will have some faith in Microsoft once again. With how these things go, make sure to take this with a grain of salt until there’s an official announcement which we may be waiting for a very long time for one.
