Letters from the Front

Every year there tends to be a rumor so massive that it gets the internet talking. Last year, there were tons of rumors floating around claiming that Microsoft would buy out Electronic Arts and their entire portfolio and Valve which Gabe Newell addressed which shut down the rumors. Nonetheless, Microsoft was very active in 2018 and purchasing studios left and right, one of them being Obsidian Entertainment, the makers of Fallout: New Vegas and Outerworlds which ended with Microsoft making a huge comeback at the end of the year.

Reason why I brought up Microsoft and the rumors that were floating around early last year is that we’re seeing the same thing but this time with Sony and Take-2 Interactive. MarketWatch shook the internet last week when they revealed that Take-2 shares were up by 7% and that Sony was interested in buying out Take-2 Interactive, it was also noted that Sony was deeply advanced in the acquistion stating that the deal to acquire Take 2 will be completed via a cash deal.

This rumor brought the internet almost down to its knees as Sony would acquire not only BioShock, Borderlands, NBA 2K, but also acquire Rockstar Games along with their portfolio which means Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. Sony would have control over some of the world’s biggest games, it would be a game-changing acquisition as Mafia, BioShock, Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and more would be made Playstation exclusives and being that Grand Theft Auto V sold 100 million copies and is the most profitable piece of entertainment of all time, this would be a huge deal. On top of Grand Theft Auto V, you have Red Dead Redemption that sold 23 million copies since it first released in October 2018 and then you have NBA 2K which is single-handily the best selling sports game outside of EA’s Madden NFL franchise and is single-handily one of the top 10 best selling games each year.

This possibility will excite Playstation fans while this news wouldn’t be exciting for people that play on Xbox or PC as they would be missing out on some of the world’s biggest games. This news took me by surprise but it wouldn’t be surprising as Take-2 and Sony have always worked closely with each other. Rockstar Games was developing AGENT, a Playstation 3 exclusive that never saw the light of day and nearly all of their games two generations ago appeared first on the Playstation 2 before making their way to the original Xbox and PC and they recently partnered up with Sony for Red Dead Redemption 2 so the connection between these two giants are very tight and Sony emphasied that they want more variety with the games that they’re pushing out. The most important question here is can it happen?

I personally think Sony won’t buy out Take 2 Interactive but crazier things have happened. Sony has enough money to make this sort of thing come through but the question here is if would they? Personally, as someone who is very pro-consumer I think this isn’t the right way of going about things, especially if you have fans of Rockstar Games and 2K Games on the opposite side of the fence. You have people who are fans of Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K, BioShock, Mafia, and more that play on Xbox or the PC and those people would end up just getting angry as perhaps those people don’t want to buy a Playstation nor care for Playstation and or Sony to go buy a product of theirs just to play GTA or NBA 2K. On the other hand, I don’t believe in exclusivity and this would certainly produce a shockwave across the industry with possibly Microsoft buying out a giant corporation like EA.

I personally think it won’t happen but never say never. What do you make of this rumor? Let me know down below or on Twitter.
