Female characters have come long away since I started playing videogames in the early 2000’s. When I was growing up, the only characters that happened to be women were Cortana, Lara Croft, Manon Batiste from the Medal of Honor games, Chun-Li and that was mainly it. Nowadays, there are far more protagonists and secondary characters who we can admire and deeply fall in love with. I myself may have or have not a few crushes on the women on this list.
I was heavily inspired by Later Levels’ blog on this subject matter and I decided to delve in and bring you some of my favorite female characters in videogames. Let’s begin!
Female Shepard is very underrated and sometimes overlooked by Male Shepard as he is usually the one that’s up and center in marketing materials, screenshots, trailers, and much more so sometimes you can be mistaken that Shepard is only male. Female Shepard was a minor addition in the original game but that was later expanded upon in the later games; she ended up being one of the most iconic characters in video game history.
I love Geralt but Ciri, I love even more. Ciri in The Witcher trilogy doesn’t necessarily get a lot of attention until The Witcher 3, the final game in the epic saga.
In The Witcher 3, Ciri has gone missing so Geralt must go and find her before the arch-nemesis and the ultimate villain of the game, The Wild Hunt, finds her. At this point, if you haven’t played it then go and play it because you won’t find spoils to one of the generation’s best games here. I firmly believe that if CDPR developed a potiential Witcher 4 or a Witcher spin-off with Ciri as a main character, it would be a big hit as Ciri can firmly stand on her own without Geralt or without his friends, she would be an amazing protagonist.
Fighting through hell and coming back alive changes you forever, even an 8 year old. Clementine never gives up the fight to survive. In Season One, she was defenseless but then grew into a capable fighter by Season Two and by Season 3, she was experienced. Her story was very inspirational and I’m glad she got the ending that she deserved at the end of the Walking Dead Game franchise.
This one was pretty obvious but it’s for a reason. Gaming in the 1990s was very different to gaming of the present, female protagonists were quite rare to begin with and gaming was apparently for losers in those days but Lara Croft changed all of that. She became a cultural icon, a pop culture icon, and much more when the original Tomb Raider released.
Throughout the years, she, as with everything in this world, was rebooted a few times with the most famous version of her having pointy boobs and was very sexy and sassy. But that version isn’t depicted here, my all-time favorite version of her is through the modern day reboot of the Lara Croft series by Crystal Dynamics. Crystal Dynamics’ version of Lara Croft reminds me a lot of Christopher Nolan’s Bruce Wayne, Lara is very grounded and very real as she could exist in the real world much like Christopher Nolan’s Bruce Wayne. I love that Crystal Dynamics made her feel like a real person that could exist in our world, a very grounded take on an iconic character.
Alyx is one of the most important characters within Half-Life 2. Alyx is an exceptionally well-realised character. She behaved like a normal person, everything that she did was very important and had context within the game world and within the plot line of Half Life 2 and its episodes.
Alyx was in many ways a foreshadow of gaming characters to come after the release of Half Life 2. We see many characters like her in today’s gaming world, although, not on the same level. We need more of her in this world; a character that feels real.
Much like Alyx Vance, Elizabeth Comstock is in a league of her own and is one of my favorite characters within gaming.
In BioShock Infinite, Booker DeWitt must go to Columbia and bring her somewhere to repay a debt. When we meet her, she opens a tear to Paris 1985 and shocks Booker and eventually reacts negatively until she realizes the significance of another human being and being in contact with another human. Elizabeth, as an A.I and her relationship to Songbird, is very real and a revolution in gaming.
Her relationship to Songbird was very complex and her personality was very real, not to mention, her actions and her behavior as an NPC was very believable. She really felt like a friend and the relationship between her and Booker made BioShock Infinite BioShock Infinite. We need more characters like her in gaming.
In the Halo lore, Cortana was created from Dr. Catharine Halsey’s brain and on November 7th, 2549, Cortana was first activated on Reach. She met the Chief before the Fall of Reach and was installed on the Pillar of Autumn where she developed a deep and personal loyalty to the Chief which would later develop into a friendship as the war against the Covenant raged on and they would go on multiple adventures together.
Cortana is one of my favorite characters in all of gaming. She is one of the most important characters in Halo and one of the most important characters within video game history; much like Lara Croft, she made history.
The American Frontier is filled with history that makes up a good majority of the country that we live in: From Outlaws to Sheriffs to Cowboys and Indians to Mexican Soldiers storming the Alamo , there has never been a country that takes a specific period from its past and turns it into an icon. There’s nothing more iconic then an American cowboy riding his horse into the sunset or the heroic sheriff bringing in a band of outlaws to justice or Davy Crockett. The West was a tale of conquest but also one of survival.
Survival is at the heart of Sadie Adler’s personality. When we meet Sadie Adler in Colter at the beginning of the game, her husband was killed and her house was robbed and may have been burned down by our own hand after one of our gang members, Micah, got in a little ruffle with her. As the game progresses, Sadie becomes a major part of the story with her forming a very close friendship with Arthur Morgan and becomes very loyal to him, even admitting to him that he’s the only one that she fully trusts. Eventually, she parts ways with John’s family in 1907 and heads to South America.
Sadie Adler is one of my favorite characters in Red Dead Redemption 2 and of all time. She is well-written and well-realized, she is definitely one of Rockstar’s best characters. If there is a Red Dead Redemption 2 Singleplayer-DLC on the way then there should definitely be an add-on that focuses on Sadie Adler.
