Letters from the Front

As the Xbox library continues to grow and mature, we now have quite a few games worth playing on Microsoft’s platform. Whether you’re a veteran like myself or a newcomer to the Xbox ecosystem, I’ve complied some of the best games to play on your Xbox One.

Red Dead Redemption II

Rockstar’s best work is the most definitive game on this list to play on the Xbox One, especially if you own the Xbox One X. This is an quintessential experience that you absolutely cannot miss on Microsoft’s home console. Rockstar’s reputation continues with Red Dead Redemption II, which in my opinion, is Rockstar’s absolute best work.

Unprecedented environmental detail, dynamic weather systems, a story worthy of the best Hollywood movies and worthy of the Western genre, realistic character presentations, and so much more makes Red Dead Redemption II the ultimate experience. Set in the closing days of the Final Frontier in 1899, one of the era’s last surviving gangs attempts to escape and rebuild their fortunes after a costly run-in with law enforcement.

Red Dead Redemption II is mostly a story-focused game, where you’ll guide Arthur Morgan and his motley crew across risky daring missions like train robberies, bank robberies, and daring raids. Red Dead Redemption II spans across five fictional US states west from the Mississippi River across a wide range of locales, this game should not be missed.

The Outer Worlds

I’m simply choosing this game to spite Bethesda’s handling of the Fallout franchise and dragging one of my favorite franchises into the mud.

Built by Obsidian, makers of the famed 2010 hit Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds is a return to the classic RPG formula of the 2000’s and early 2010’s. It sports the same charm, wit, and consequences as Fallout 3, New Vegas, and all the classic RPGs that we love. The Outer Worlds is an absolute must-buy if you love the genre as much as I do.

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 is one of a kind classic. An old classic from the 1990s, completely remade for the current generation of hardware and remade for the modern day. Resident Evil 2’s 2019 iteration is horror done right and proves that the original had a timeless formula.

Set in Raccoon City at the height of the zombie outbreak, it follows Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield who are both caught up in a massive disaster. This is a must buy for horror fans.

Forza Horizon 4

Forza Horizon has always been the racing series that everyone can enjoy and have fun in without the more realistic nature as its sister franchise, Forza Motorsport, but the fourth iteration of the award winning series, it kicked everything up a notch. Forza Horizon 4 is the most ambitious game in the franchise yet with a vast open world that is shared paired with weekly content as well it’s a beaut to look at.

On Xbox One X, it offers 4K HDR visuals, a performance mode with a 60 FPS frame rate and destructible environments. And thanks to Xbox Game Pass and Play Anywhere, Forza Horizon 4 can be accessed anywhere.

Gears of War 5

It’s not easy to redefine a series known for big bulky dudes, corridor shooting, cinematic gameplay, and a series that revolutionized a genre and revolutionized the Xbox 360. The Coalition’s first stab at Gears after acquiring it from Epic Games was a safe game, good enough to hold the water down and they succeeded.

Gears of War 5 is a technical achievement from top to bottom which makes it one of the best Xbox One games to play. Gears of War 5 is one of the greatest games in the franchise since the original Gears of War trilogy, it is a complete step in the right direction and it shows that the Coalition knows what they’re doing when it comes to Gears.

Rainbow Six: Siege

Rainbow Six: Siege continues to draw in millions each and every year, it is how you properly do a Live Service. There’s no other multiplayer shooter in the market that matches Ubisoft’s hero-driven, tense, skill-driven battlefront.

With Operator learning, skill knowledge, map knowledge, and so much more makes Rainbow Six: Siege a tough learning curve for recruits but once learned, the game takes on brand new light. The formula is seen in perfect daylight.

Battlefield 4

Seven years after its release, Battlefield 4 remains one of the best military shooters on the market and remains one of the best multiplayer shooters of the past 10 years, many consider Battlefield 4 the peak of the franchise as the latter entries, especially Battlefield V, fail to impress and fail to innovate, outside of Battlefield 1.

2013 was an excellent time for the franchise, Battlefield 4 released right on the heels of Battlefield 3, DICE’s magnum opus, which exploded onto the mainstream in 2011 and pushed the envelope further for the FPS genre. Maps were huge, the destruction was unlike anything before, and multiplayer was chaotic and fun. Battlefield 4 is one of the best shooters of the decade and the best part is that the game is still alive. Give it a shot.

Battlefield 1

Battlefield 1 is probably the best historical shooter of the generation. There is nothing quite like it and there will be nothing like it ever again. Set during the course of The Great War, a first for Triple A shooters, Battlefield 1 made history and was quite innovative.

Battlefield 1 brought the conflict to life in ways that only the old World War II games of the 2000’s only could; history lessons at every turn, through every game mode, the door was now open on shining a light on the forgotten generation, a generation now lost to time and space. If it wasn’t for Battlefield 1 and for it’s historic groundbreaking, World War I and the Forgotten Generation would’ve been truly lost to time.

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3, much like Red Dead Redemption II, is the most definitive game of the generation. The Witcher 3 is a masterpiece of its own. Built by CDPR, The Witcher 3 is hands down the best RPG on Xbox One to date, by a huge margin. Set in a dark fantasy world, The Witcher 3 is the conclusion to Geralt’s story and a wrap up of everything we’ve seen throughout the first two games.

The Witcher 3 is packed to the brim with content, hours upon hours of side quests, quests, loot, and so much more. This is the definitive RPG to play on Xbox One.

Red Dead Redemption 2 retains the spot for the best game to play and for numerous reasons. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the new standard of open world, action adventure games and is the new bar to beat in gaming. Very few games have approached what Rockstar has achieved with Red Dead Redemption II.
